It is surprising that this building, which can be considered a true landmark in the architecture of its time and is, without a doubt, the most interesting town hall built until then in Bizkaia, has not received the recognition it deserves.
The project involved building a modern town hall, including courts, in one of the most industrialized towns in the Basque Country, which already had 78,000 inhabitants in 1960.
The answer consisted of a perfectly volumetrically articulated building, on a T-shaped floor plan that took over the large plot, although creating an open courtyard at the main entrance from the Plaza de los Fueros (currently Herriko Plaza).
The treatment of the main body and the composition of its facades, consisting of large panels, are striking. Both the overall layout and the details evoke Scandinavian architecture, and more specifically that of the Danish architect Jacobsen.
