Medieval Road

View on map

The Santa Águeda road is part of the route that, during the Middle Ages, ran from the Devil's Bridge (Kastrexana) to the Ugarte neighborhood, passing through Santa Águeda. In Ugarte, the road branched off to Portugalete and Trapagaran. It forms part of the Camino de Santiago on the Coastal Route.

The roadway has a regular width ranging between 2.20 and 2.40 meters, with three distinct areas. On the sides, large, flat, smooth slabs delimit and contain the pavement, and the wagon wheels would run along them. In the central area, we find a spine of well-grounded stones parallel to the track layout, arranged vertically, which served as a guide for the carters. Between the spine and the slabs at the ends, we find a filled area where boulders predominate, with a more irregular distribution, thus facilitating the passage of horses.

Currently, we can only see part of the road, excavated in several sections, as most of it coincides with the paved road.
