Sacred Heart of Jesus Church

View on map

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Retuerto, is located on the site of an old chapel dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola and was built in the 1940s. With a single nave and side chapels, a tall tower adjoins the polygonal apse, on which stands the large image of the Sacred Heart. Its entire decoration follows a classicist approach and includes murals in some sections of the ceiling and side chapels, paintings of Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Joseph, and the Virgin at the chevet, beneath which is the chapel of the Garay Sesumaga family (who commissioned the building), a cement main altarpiece of little value with a carving of the Sacred Heart and also carvings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Saint Isidore the Farmer, and Saint Anthony. Finally, the Sacred Heart of Mary, in Burceña, once again repeats classicist patterns in its interior and exterior construction, although it also incorporates Baroque elements, especially in its Herrerian-style tower.
