San Mamés is a football stadium that opened its first phase of construction on September 16, 2013, and is the successor to the former San Mamés.
The stadium takes its name from Saint Mamés, the boy martyr who, according to legend, tamed the lions to whom he was thrown. This is also why Athletic Bilbao players are called "the lions."
It is primarily used by Athletic Club for football, although it has other complementary uses, including a sports innovation center and a sports medicine center, an underground athletics track, and a municipal sports center.

Athletic Club de Bilbao is much more than a football team. It embodies the values of hard work and a commitment to its "football academy" as its philosophy. Founded in 1898 and whose colors are red and white, this team has had a new stadium since 2013.
With a capacity for 53,000 spectators, it is a world-class venue, both for its architecture and its facilities. Its design, comfort, safety, access, and services have led UEFA to classify San Mamés as the highest-rated venue for hosting major football events, such as Euro 2020. It will also be used as a venue for large-scale concerts, like its predecessor.
