This sculpture is a monument in honor of the Huelva-born sailor Alonso Sánchez. According to the legend spread in the early 17th century by the writer and historian Garcilaso de la Vega in his book "Comentarios Reales," the Huelva-born sailor was the first European to reach the Caribbean islands.
It is said that this protonaut (a Portuguese term for pioneer sailors) may have met Christopher Columbus and given him nautical information on how to reach the other Atlantic coast.
