12 – Cornea

The cornea is the transparent part of the eye through which light enters.

The photograph shows a section of a whale's cornea. In the upper right corner of the photograph, epithelial cells are visible, arranged on highly organized layers of collagen fibers, like layers of puff pastry. In the photo prepared for touch, they are colored green and textured as lines in the lower corner of the photo. This highly ordered arrangement of collagen fibers gives the retina transparency and flexibility.

The human and whale cornea are very similar in shape and structure, but the whale cornea is 5 times thicker than that of humans.
