19 – Display case with whalebone and plastic on the floor

At this point there is a display case in which the baleen of a whale is shown.

Fin whales feed on small mollusks and fish, which they catch by filtering the water they ingest through their baleen plates, which act as filters rather than teeth.

On the ground are plastics collected on the beach where the first whale stranded.

The reason for displaying the plastics is to raise awareness that whales, as filter-feeding animals, cannot distinguish plastic from food when feeding. Consequently, plastics can be one of the causes of their death.

Keeping the seas clean is essential to preserving marine wildlife, and whales in particular.

Three animated videos about this research and exhibition are shown on a television.
