The image shows an egg-crate-shaped clot with circular red blood cells trapped inside. These blood cells have an actual diameter of 0.005 millimeters, very similar to that of humans or mice. The blue substance surrounding them is fibrin and other coagulation proteins. We don't know why we find clots with this shape in whales.
Next to this photograph is another one showing a small capillary and red blood cells inside it, the same dimensions as in the textured clot.
