The Cantabrian holm oak forest

It is one of the most representative ecosystems of Urdaibai, which profoundly defines its landscape and determines its fauna.

These forests are crucial from an ecological and biogeographic perspective, harboring plant species adapted to water scarcity, especially in summer. These plants develop extensive roots and small, leathery leaves that retain moisture by regulating water loss through their stomata.
