Sandindere Island

Photo of a spectacular estuary landscape. In the foreground, water, which later transitions to sand, a tree-covered island in the center, and green mountains in the background.

An island covered in dense Cantabrian holm oak forest, it is a rocky outcrop from the Late Cretaceous period that has resisted erosion better than the soft Triassic materials on which it stands. It bears witness to the origin of the Urdaibai estuary.

In other times it was a warehouse and even a powder magazine, when sailing ships and barges still found draft in Urdaibai.
