Plaza Mayor and the Granary

2013— HISTORIC SITE DECLARED AN ASSET OF CULTURAL INTEREST

Colmenar de Oreja’s Plaza Mayor welcomes you with its Castilian charm, where limestone arcades and wooden balconies take you back in time.

Built between the 18th and 19th centuries, this square was a tremendous piece of workmanship that linked the town (old quarter) with the suburbs, overcoming a ravine by means of the iconic Zacatín Bridge on which it stands. From here, the picturesque urban landscape unfolds before your eyes.

Beyond its stunning architecture, Plaza Mayor is home to two 18th-century wonders: the Town Hall, with its two arcaded floors and covered corridor, and the historic Granary Building, which was once a communal granary that regulated wheat prices and offered help in times of need.

Nowadays, the arcades of the square shelter cosy restaurants where you can enjoy the exquisite cuisine of Madrid, together with its famous wines.

Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the history and food of Colmenar de Oreja in Plaza Mayor!

A magnificent example of a Castilian arcaded square, set upon a colossal stone tunnel. Construction began in 1676 and was completed in 1794.
