1974 - DECLARED A HISTORIC AND ARTISTIC SITE
Climbing to the top of the Torre del Homenaje (The Keep), it all becomes clear why the Order of Santiago chose Villarejo de Salvanés as the seat of the Encomienda Mayor de Castilla. The strategic location of the fortress and its imposing presence represent centuries of history and power.
As you walk through the streets of the town, the profound influence of the Order of Santiago left on its heritage can be felt. Key examples are the Casa de la Tercia, the headquarters of the encomienda for more than five centuries; the Church of St. Andrew, dedicated to the patron saint of the Order of Santiago; and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory at Lepanto, with ties to the historic navy battle.
Villarejo de Salvanés is also a top destination for olive oil and wine tourism, with a rich tradition of agriculture that still stands strong to this day. It is also home to two very special museums: the Tercios Museum, the first museum dedicated to the elite military unit that marked the history of Spain and Europe; and the Film Museum, with an exceptional collection like no other in Europe, dedicated to the seventh art.
Since 1974, the municipality has been recognised as a Historic and Artistic Site, underlining its rich heritage and cultural legacy. Villarejo de Salvanés is not just about history, but also tradition and celebration, with festivals that keep its identity alive and invite you to discover the soul of this unique place.
