CaixaForum is a cultural center managed by the "la Caixa" Foundation and located on Paseo del Prado in Madrid. The center is located in one of the few examples of industrial architecture in the city's historic center, the former Central Eléctrica del Mediodía (Mid-East Electric Power Plant), dating from the early 20th century. The renovation project was developed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, and the facility was inaugurated in 2008.
CaixaForum's activities focus on temporary exhibitions, with a notable recent partnership with the British Museum in London. The center's exhibition themes typically revolve around archaeology, art, design, and photography. These exhibitions are interspersed with socially-oriented exhibitions. The center's programming is complemented by various film series, conferences, and concerts. Part of its facilities are regularly used for external events by foundations, media outlets, associations, and others. It regularly hosts the La Caixa Scholarship Awards and the Economics Night.
The building features a café-restaurant and a free-access shop. In 2018, it became the third most visited museum in Madrid and the fourth in Spain, with nearly a million visitors.
