Along with Guernica and various works by Picasso, it houses works by the greatest artists of the 20th century, mainly Spanish (Dalí, Miró, Juan Gris, Tàpies, Chillida, and more). The museum was formerly the San Carlos General Hospital, designed by Sabatini during the reign of Charles III and restored for its current use. Its latest expansion was completed in 2005, following the innovative project of Jean Nouvel.
