Alongside Guernica and various works by Picasso, it houses works by some of the greatest 20th-century artists, primarily Spanish (Dalí, Miró, Juan Gris, Tàpies, Chillida, etc.). The museum was formerly the San Carlos General Hospital, designed by Sabatini during the reign of Charles III and restored for its current use. Its latest expansion, based on Jean Nouvel's innovative design, was completed in 2005.
