Tapas in Madrid

Going for tapas, one of Madrid's favorite culinary activities, consists of exploring bars and taverns tasting small portions of culinary specialties, hot or cold, accompanied by beer, wine, soft drinks, or vermouth. The older sister of tapas are raciones (small portions). It is said that their origin lies in a slice of bread placed over a glass of wine to cover it. In Madrid, it is very common to have tapas for lunch or dinner in one of the city's many restaurants, bars, or taverns. Patatas bravas (fried potatoes), Spanish omelet, garlic shrimp, fried eggs, or croquettes are some of the many tapas to savor. They can be found throughout the city, but the most typical areas are around Plaza de Santa Ana, Plaza Mayor, Cava Baja and Cava Alta, and the Lavapiés neighborhood.
