Poble Nou and Peñacerrada Palace

View on map

We are in Poble Nou, which in the past belonged to the judicial district of Xixona, had its own town hall and formed a separate population entity, until on January 1, 1846, it was incorporated into the municipality of Mutxamel.

We can appreciate the Peñacerrada Palace, a neoclassical palace dating from the late 18th century. It is a large L-shaped palatial building.

The house is composed of two clearly distinct parts. One is the old palace, and the other is the new palace, located to the east and overlooking the garden. To the left is the old palace with its three floors, and to the right is the new palace building, which is taller than the old one on the top floor.

The façade that can be seen from the square is not the main facade of the palace, but the one the Marquis wanted his workers and the rest of the population to be able to see, the less showy one.

The houses gathered around the Plaza del Poble Nou were the residence of the families who worked for the Marquis of Beniel and Peñacerrada.

The garden combines the most important features of European gardening. Inside, you can still see remains of its fountains, marble sculptures, and the old gardens, all clear examples of European styles: French, English, and Italian. Its Hispano-Arabic irrigation system is also noteworthy.

It has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest, within the Historic Garden category.

It is open to the public on Sunday mornings and offers guided tours, dramatized visits, and various workshops. You can check the program on the municipal website: www.ayto.mutxamel.org
