Hermitage of Montserrat

View on map

The Montserrat site and sanctuary have been linked to water for centuries. The Acequia Mayor (main irrigation channel) and the "fillola de l'Alluser" (Alluser watercourse), which ran through this part of the municipality, along with the watermills and traditional houses, made this area one of the most beautiful and productive areas of the Mutxamelera orchard.

The ringing of the hermitage bell, after a heavy storm, announced to the village farmers that they could go and irrigate their lands with flood water or "aiguaüt"

Its construction dates back to the 16th century and was originally the residence of the Minim Friars, who later moved to the Convent of San Francisco. It has undergone several restorations over the years.

To speak of the hermitage of Montserrat and its surroundings is to evoke the beginning of the September festivities and the love of the inhabitants of Ravalet and Poble Nou for the Virgin of Montserrat, known as "the Black Virgin."

The path lined with centuries-old cypress trees is known as the "Paseo de la Alameda." At the beginning of the walk, in one of its green areas, we can admire one of the first machines used to peel the almonds that were abundant in these fields.
