In Madrid, you can visit one of the grandest palaces in Europe, brimming with treasures. At the gates of the Royal Palace, the Solemn Changing of the Guard takes place, just as it did during the reigns of Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII. It is held on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:00 noon, except in July, August, and September, on official events, or in bad weather, and is accompanied by military music. In addition, every Wednesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Changing of the Guard is held at the Prince's Gate of the Royal Palace, except on days of the Solemn Changing of the Guard, during official events, or in bad weather. Every 30 minutes, guards in full dress uniform take up positions (two on foot and two on horseback) in front of the Prince's Gate to the rhythm of drums and fifes.
