Old tide gauge in the center of the promenade

The Tide Gauge, located at the end of the Pier, was built in Paris and installed by the Port Works Board in 1883.

This is a nautical instrument that measures the depth of the riverbed. It records the rise and fall of the water level with the tides. This extremely important information facilitated ships' passage through the estuary. Today, it is a testament to the fact that it paves the way for the Iron Pier.
