Lanestosa is the smallest municipality in Bizkaia, although it holds the status of a town . It has barely a hundred inhabitants and seems untouched by time. Its cobbled streets, lined with houses with continuous balconies overflowing with flowers, have retained the same layout since the 13th century.
The town is located in a narrow valley bathed by the Calera River . It was founded in the 13th century , next to the old Royal Road, thanks to which the small settlement grew and prospered. For this reason, elegant houses and mansions were built, all vying for the attention of visitors.
Its urban center of cobbled streets transports us to the Middle Ages , and in it are integrated the popular houses with continuous balconies (in the Cantabrian style) with the palaces of the 17th and 18th centuries, among which the Colina palace stands out.
The Old Bridge , which connected Laredo with Burgos, and the restored Lime Kiln , which was used to produce lime from limestone, are other points of historical interest in this well-preserved old town.
Despite its small size, or perhaps because of it, Lanestosa is a charming place . Its layout is perfect, with three straight, cobbled streets parallel to the river, intersected by two shorter ones, all with an unmistakable medieval structure .
Lanestosa, without having lost its rural character, boasts houses with balconies and corridors, cobbled streets, a porticoed square and some palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries that deserve to be discovered by strolling through its streets.
There are multiple options for hiking and enjoying exceptional scenery : climbing Mount Zalama, Balgerri with its beech forest, the Relux window, etc.
