Barranco Fountain and Zacatín Gardens

The waterway

This fountain is located at the bottom of the Zacatín Gardens, at the foot of Plaza Mayor. Its water is sourced from a well that was dug in Roman times in the 2nd century BC. The fountain was built in 1779 and is one of the most important in the municipality, with a wide gallery supported by Romanesque arches connecting to troughs and washbasins that were of great service.

View of the beautiful gardens, where the fountain and the stone basins take centre stage. Here, the water reaches a robust masonry gallery and flows through a single spout into a large chamber covered by a framework of stone slabs resting on Romanesque arches. From this first gallery, the water passes into another open basin and then into a further one.
