Hermitage of El Calvari

View on map

Located in the Calvari mountain range, built in the 18th century, it has a Greek cross plan, covered in its central section by an octagonal dome. Its orientation is different from that of the other two chapels, with the main altar to the west and the entrance facing east. From its elevated position, one can enjoy a wide view of the Huerta, El Campello, and several watchtowers along the coast.

In the vicinity of the hermitage we find a recreational area, a picnic area and a botanical area.

The hermitage is part of the route of the local trail SL-CV 152 El Canyar de les Portelles – El Calvari.   A path through the town centre and surrounding areas of Mutxamel where you can see the Parish Church with its defensive tower, the Plaza Nova, traditional houses with their overhangs, orchard houses such as Finca la Costera, Finca La Horteta or Finca El de Caballo, and the Hermitage of Sant Antoni and the Hermitage of Calvari, which can be accessed via a cypress path.

It is a place of pilgrimage year after year to celebrate the Way of the Cross on Good Friday.

History tells us that on April 25, 1812, a battle took place at this location between Allied and French troops. Around 1,000 soldiers from Napoleon's army arrived in Mutxamel from La Vila Joiosa. There, they encountered a Spanish column coming from Alicante. The battle, on Calvari Hill, lasted several hours and ended when, with the arrival of French reinforcements from Xixona, the Spanish were forced to retreat to Alicante.
