5. Church of Sant Jaume

View on map

The Church of San Jaime (Sant Jaume) is, along with those of Santa Eulalia, San Miguel, and Santa Cruz, one of the four oldest parishes in Palma. It's also located on one of Palma's most stately streets, where boutique hotels alternate with historic bars and gastronomic spaces, as well as art galleries. And to further convince you, and also to help you find your way around, just a few steps away is Avenida Jaume III, one of the city's commercial arteries.

As for the church itself, it is a fine example of single-nave Gothic architecture. Its portal was rebuilt in 1776 by the Mallorcan sculptor Miquel Tomàs, who decorated it with rocaille pieces and a bust of Saint James the Apostle. Inside, there are two important vestiges of Baroque art: the canvases by Miquel Pons Cantallops in the Chapel of the Holy Christ, and the altarpiece of Saint Cajetan.

The tight proportions make Sant Jaume a place of great simplicity and beauty. The coats of arms of the benefactors who sponsored its construction are preserved in the keystones of the vault. In this respect, the church is a true showcase of heraldry.
