Facade of the convent in ashlar stone, highlighting the bell tower in the belfry

Former Convent of “Las Clarisas”, currently the Santa Clara Cultural Center.

In 1614, some nuns from Orduña (Bizkaia) joined a group of blessed women from Portugalete. They embraced the rule of Saint Clare and founded this cloistered convent outside the city walls.

The convent building, which is in the unadorned Baroque style, suffered the consequences of the tumultuous socio-political and economic events that occurred throughout the 19th century. Also, at the end of the 19th century, two elements were renovated in a historicist style: the main entrance and the bell gable.

In 1976, the nuns abandoned the convent, and it was acquired by the City Council. It was renovated and now houses the Town Cultural Center.
