16. Rosmarinus tomentosus

Romero blanco

This species, belonging to the Labiatae family, produces an ethanolic extract that has been shown to be effective in treating liver cirrhosis, significantly reducing the degree of fibrosis. The plant is endemic to a very narrow coastal strip in Andalucía, between the provinces of Granada and Málaga. In terms of population structure, 75 % of the individuals are quite old, falling within the 25-50 age range. Although germination has been observed, most seedlings do not survive beyond their first year.

Distribution

It is endemic to a narrow coastal zone in Andalucía, specifically in the provinces of Granada and Málaga. Two distinct populations have been identified, each showing some discontinuities in their distribution.

Habitat

The plant grows in rocky scrublands on dolomitic limestone cliffs, primarily along sea-facing slopes, at altitudes between 10 and 300 metres. Its habitat is characterised by rocky terrain, exposure to wind and salt spray, and magnesium-rich soils.

Conservation

The few known populations of this species face significant threats due to intense human activity. These include urbanisation, tourism (especially form beachgoers and climbers), pollution, illegal dumping, and road expansion. In the Almuñécar population, urban has reduced the core population from 250 to just 30 individuals. In the Castell de Ferro population, the species has disappeared from two headlands due to road construction. Other threats include hybridisation with common or blue rosemary, a high risk of fire, and seed predation by insects. The species is currently conserved in cultivated collections at the Córdoba Botanical Garden, and its seeds are stored in the Andalucía Germplasm Bank.

Images description

The optical microscope image shows a nucellus approximately 1-2 millimetres in length. It has an oval or slightly elongated shape with rounded ends and a distinct insertion surface, visible as an indentation that disrupts the overall contour. The colour ranges from light brown to dark brown, while the insertion surface connecting to the receptacle is light beige. The outer coating is finely textured with a subtle sheen, suggesting the presence of a protective cuticle.
