It was built in 1945 to supply industry, as the Old Reservoir, constructed in 1897 (upstream of the Regatta), was insufficient for the spectacular industrial and population growth. Today, both constitute important ecosystems and are part of Barakaldo's green landscape. A pedestrian walkway runs along the right bank of the reservoir, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique natural landscape due to its proximity to the water. Visitors can enjoy robins and wrens as they stroll. In winter, cormorants, egrets, and herons can be seen.
