The ancient Roman colony of Flaviobriga was built in the area currently occupied by the historic center of the city, as is known from the analysis of its urban layout and the various archaeological remains found in the area.
The defensive and strategic nature of the site, as well as the ease with which it established trade networks, were determining factors in its location.
Currently converted into an interpretation center, this site preserves vestiges of the old colony. It has an orthogonal layout that can be seen in the fragments of streets and private and public buildings, such as the nearby thermal baths.
Flaviobriga was one of the main commercial ports between the north of Hispania and the Gaul, -the city was even walled between the 1st and 3rd centuries, and the only Roman colony on the Cantabrian coast.
