Txatxarramendi Island is located in a privileged spot, at the mouth of the Oka River . This island, connected to the mainland by a beautiful bridge to the town of Sukarrieta, houses AZTI (a marine and food research center) and a small pier.
As for our more recent history, the island was an important milestone in Urdaibai as a tourist destination .
Between 1896 and 1947 it housed the Hotel Txatxarramendi , which was primarily responsible for ensuring that the train reached the town.
Between 1919 and 1968, the Hostal Paco , a true tourism hub in the region with its shellfish nursery, or cetareum , stood opposite the island. When the hostel closed, the state of conservation of the cetareum deteriorated.
The island is also home to the Txatxarramendi Botanical Park , dedicated to the interpretation and identification of the species present and where you can explore one of the oldest holm oak forests in Urdaibai.
In addition, it is an ideal place for observing typical marsh birds .
