Anchuelo - Peace and Pilgrimages

View on map

Anchuelo is all about peace, plain and simple: only peace. That’s something rather difficult to find nowadays. Its square is a great place to have a little rest. It is a typical town square with all its charm and simplicity, where no awnings are needed for shade, as leafy poplar trees give it shelter. Cats sit and watch the world go by from the shade, children play ball games, and people of the town chat away without a care in the world.

In other words, it offers a life forgotten by many, and yet so within everyone’s reach, if only we put our minds to it.

Take a break here and try our cuisine, including game dishes such as migas, gachas and rabbit with garlic. Enjoy pleasant walks such as the route to the Fuente de la Cuesta (Fountain on the Hill), or make your way to the natural spring thatconceals a legend.

Join us in celebrating our most famous festivals

  • St. Peter Martyr From 28 April to 2 May

Together with the procession and celebrations, it is traditional to order seafood soup, roast lamb and for dessert you cannot possibly skip the rice pudding.

  • St. Christopher First Sunday in July

A peculiar procession of lorries, buses, cars, and other vehicles that set off from the town to the hermitage, some 2 km away.

  • Live Nativity Weekend before Christmas Eve/Christmas Day

The whole town gets involved in this performance, spread over several streets of the town, and the actors are the residents of Anchuelo themselves. You must sign up via the town hall, as visits are pre-arranged in groups. The experience is truly worth it, especially if someone treats you to a hot chocolate or soup after the performance.

View of the surroundings of Anchuelo, a peaceful municipality, gracious in its landscapes and rich in springs that were once greatly renowned, such as the Archbishop’s Spring, which still flows today and from which, they say, Cardinal Cisneros himself once drank.
