The Legend of the Treasure of Retuenga

View on map

In Vega de Retuenga, a land that echoes stories and mysteries, the legend of a hidden treasure engulfs the air with an aura of intrigue. Tradition has it that only a Muslim can reveal its location, a secret that captivated Theobald, a daring local from the time of the Spanish Reconquest. Ignoring the predestined warnings, he ventured in search of the hidden fortune, defying fate and the voices that prophesied calamity. Theobald persisted in his quest, even when a spirit warned him that his stubbornness would dry up the town’s vines and divert the streams. Inevitably, the vines withered, the streams changed their course and the original town was abandoned, giving rise to what is now Anchuelo. Despite the devastation, he never gave up on his dream of becoming rich, but the treasure was never found. The archaeological remains of an ancient settlement, described in the chronicles of Cardinal Lorenzana, speak of rooms, sarcophagi and jewellery that suggest it was inhabited in the past, but it was probably wiped out by epidemics. Today, legends invite you to explore beyond the town, towards the Shepherds’ Cave and the natural spring, where they still say the mysterious hidden treasure of Retuenga is waiting to be discovered.
