Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

View on map

The building dates back to the 16th century, when it was built on top of the original ruins of the municipality’s first Catholic church, which dates back to before the 13th century. The church was used as a burial site, with archaeological remains of both people and objects found from the 16th century up to 1834. In that year, the cholera epidemic brought an end to burials inside churches and adjoining premises. Notable people who were buried here include Don Alfonso de Cárdenas y Peralta, who was Philip IV’s ambassador to Naples and England.

The church is Baroque style with a Tuscan doorway. It has a three-nave floor plan with columns, semicircular arches and a lunette in the central nave. The inside was recently renovated to look its absolute best for visitors.

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is not just an emblem of the past, but the guardian of a certain history and spirituality waiting to be discovered.
