The Friar’s Cave

View on map

A cave located in the outskirts of Villaconejos, around 300 metres from the town.

It is a hole dug out within a mound, which links to a narrow corridor almost 28 metres long and contains 19 semicircular arches with chimney-shaped vents. Its walls and vaults are lined with stone and plaster.

It was built more than 300 years ago by the monks of Carmen Descalzo in the first half of the 18th century, as evidenced by its inscription dated 1734. It was used to store wine vats and later served as shelter during the Civil War.

Entrance to the Friar’s Cave, an excavation more than 300 years old, made into a small mound, with nineteen semicircular arches, chimney-shaped vents, and walls and vaults lined with light stone and gypsum.
