Fuente de abajo Fountain

View on map

This fountain was built out of Colmenar de Oreja limestone, using metal rivets to secure the joints between the various parts. As with the Fuente de Arriba fountain, the date of its construction is unknown, although there is mention of it since the mid-18th century. At the end of the walk along the fountains, the Fuente de Abajo emerges. This structure, like its sister the Fuente Arriba, was carved from the resilient limestone of Colmenar de Oreja. Its construction is meticulous down to the last detail, featuring sheet metal reinforced joints, which has ensured its preservation over the centuries. Although the exact date it was built is lost in the mists of time, documents mentioning its existence date back at least to the second half of the 18th century. In those times, before houses had access to running water, the fountain was not just a meeting point. For the locals, it was an essential hub for water supply, gossip and chit-chat.

With its fountain, washhouse and trough, which, although joined together, are clearly distinct from one another. Unlike the Upper Fountain, which has four spouts, this one has only two wrought-iron spouts.
