Hermitage of Our Lady of Remedies

View on map

Built in the 16th century, the Hermitage of Our Lady of Remedies was remodelled in the 18th century, giving it the appearance it has today. The building has a rectangular floor plan, a single nave covered by a sail dome on pendentives and a portico with metal posts in place of the old stone columns, of which only the bases remain today. The hermitage was originally dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, and it still is today, although for some years it shared the patronage with St. Catherine. Celebrations in honour of Our Lady of Remedies take place between 30 August and 9 September. On 7 September, the figure of Our Lady is carried during a procession from her hermitage to the parish church. The following day is the celebration of the Nativity of Mary and, following tradition, a parade with a brass band takes place. At midday, a solemn mass is celebrated in her honour. At sunset, the procession of the figure of Our Lady of Remedies on her float begins, and she is carried from the parish church back to her hermitage through the town’s main streets. For some years, flower wreaths have been placed to end the religious act, together with the singing of the Salve in the hermitage.

At the entrance to the historic quarter, the promenade leading to the hermitage can be seen. It dates from the 16th century, although it was rebuilt in the 18th century, acquiring the renewed appearance that has come down to us today.
