The Poplar at St. Isidore’s Fountain

View on map

Classed as the only tree of its kind in the Madrid región.

Poplars are the most famous and most loved trees in the countryside here. The famous poplar groves are typical of the scenery along Castilian riverbanks, and highly appreciated for their shade on long summer days. The genetic purity of species within the Populus genus is under great threat.

The rapid growth of poplar clones with the aim of boosting productivity has led to the genetic loss of the native species, due to the hybridisation that often takes place between them.

Fortunately, there are still specimens throughout Spain, including this poplar, ensuring the genetic purity of the European poplar.

Due to their rapid growth and the low resistance of their wood, poplars do not tend to live long, reaching a maximum age of around 100 to 150 years. This is why the poplar at St. Isidore’s Fountain, which is more than 100 years old, is considered exceptional.
