Our municipality is one of the oldest in the Madrid Region, as it is known to have been founded by the Iberians under the name of Metercosa. It contains the ruins of Torremocha castle, of medieval origin, which was the summer residence of the archbishops of Toledo and a prison for renowned figures such as the Princess of Eboli and Cardinal Cisneros.
It also maintains its traditional structure intact, conserving typically traditional houses that still have their ancient noble coats of arms on their fronts.
The most interesting things to see are the ancient walls, the Torremocha Castle/Fortress and the Church of St. Torquatus. In Santorcaz we have one of the largest and oldest oppidum sites of Celtic origin in the Madrid Region, located at El Llano de la Horca.
Join us in celebrating our most famous festivals
- St. Anthony’s Feast Day 16 January.
On the night of the 16 January, the townspeople gather in their neighbourhoods and light bonfires. Since time immemorial, it has been a tradition to burn things in honour of St. Anthony to make sure he protects the animals, which are so important for carrying out some of the town’s traditional tasks.
- St. Roch’s Feast Day 15 August.
On 15 August, a beautiful pilgrimage takes place in our municipality to the Hermitage of St. Roch, where mass is held. The townspeople all take part in a collection of items to be auctioned, hunters go hunting and the women of the town prepare roscas, a traditional sweet treat.
Attendees bid for the items collected. The money then goes towards the Church
- Holy Christ of Faith September.
The main day of the celebrations is 14 September, when the brotherhood holds a sung mass and a procession of Christ takes place with music from the Paratroopers Brigade band.
