Saint Peter of Atxarre

View on map

The 15th-century chapel , which crowns Mount Atxarre de Ibarrangelu, commands a unique panoramic view. A landscape covered by the dense Cantabrian holm oak forest next to the Urdaibai marsh, both characteristic features of the Biosphere Reserve.

It can be accessed from the Akorda neighborhood (500 meters before) or from Kanala (up past the San Martín hermitage). Along the way, ancient legends of witches' sabbaths and religious miracles intertwine. In the center of Ibarrangelua, you'll find the Church of San Andrés, known as the Sistine Chapel of Basque art thanks to its carved and polychrome vault.
