The Iron Pier is an extension of the New Pier.
It was built to solve the major navigation problem posed by the sand bar blocking the mouth of the Nervión River. It was the work of engineer Evaristo Churruca.
Its construction began in 1881 and was completed in 1887. It is 800 meters long. The first 600 meters are built with an iron frame, and the last 200 meters are built with stone.
If we walk to the lighthouse, located at the end of the Iron Pier, we can enjoy spectacular views of the Bay, the Estuary and its Suspension Bridge, the Dársena…
Retracing our steps toward the Suspension Bridge, we let ourselves be caught by the breeze and the scent of the sea that the estuary transmits to us. We head toward the oldest part of the town. And, along the way, we come across Doctor Areilza Park.

Accessibility:
As already indicated in the description of the "Walk along the Pier," the surface remains smooth, but the iron pier has handrails on both sides (caution if there are children). The last few meters before reaching the point, the surface is made of old cobblestones, and to reach the lighthouse itself, you have to climb some narrow stairs. If you have no mobility problems, it's recommended to climb them and enjoy the views. There are benches for resting along the pier.
