The Church of San Martín de Tours in Gazeo is a fine example of Romanesque architecture in this region, although its exterior appearance changed considerably following restoration work carried out in the 20th century.
Inside, it preserves an extraordinary cycle of Gothic wall paintings (14th century), rediscovered in the second half of the 20th century after remaining hidden for centuries behind the altarpiece and beneath layers of whitewash. Highly expressive, these paintings depict religious scenes such as the Trinity, the Crucifixion and episodes from Jesus’ public life. They are a true “open book” of medieval spirituality and are considered among the most valuable examples of mural painting in Spain.
