Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Alaitza

View on map

The church of Alaitza was built in Romanesque times, although over the centuries additional volumes and structures were added, altering its original appearance. Inside, it preserves exceptional wall paintings, recently dated to between the 12th and 13th centuries. Executed in a reddish tone, with simple, highly abstract strokes, the scenes painted in Alaitza offer a rich glimpse into noble life in medieval Álava.

In the apse area you can see a scene of assault and warfare, funerary rituals and scenes featuring noblewomen. Across the vaults, a wide range of figures unfolds, including a woman giving birth, several knights taking part in a tournament and a group that may represent pilgrims.
