On arriving in Estremera, you will be amazed to find one of the most magnificent churches in the region: the 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedies.
Its most valuable aspect is the restored organ built in 1716 by Felipe V’s chief organ builder, Pedro de Liborna. The town also has another unique church called the Church of the Sepulchre/of Christ, dug out of the earth, which is lit though four skylights.
As you walk through its streets, you will discover small, secluded squares with white walls and houses with barred windows, such as the House of Los Camachos, next to the church.
Whether by mountain bike or on foot, we recommend that you do the 40-Day Train Greenway, completing a route of about 14 km, where you can venture into its tunnels and discover the beauty of Estremera’s natural environment.
Join us in celebrating our most famous festivalss
- “A correr el Hornazo” Easter Monday
‘A correr el Hornazo’, which involves gathering for lunch in the countryside to eat cake with a boiled egg on top.
- Los Mayos 1 May
In the early morning, Los Mayos songs are sung to the Virgin Mary inside the church, and people parade through the town singing Los Mayos de las Mozas.
- St. Isidore 15 May
On the eve of St. Isidore, a bonfire takes place in his namesake square, where old junk is burned to signal the arrival of the new era. On the 15th, a procession carries the Saint to the borders of the town to bless the fields
Our flavours
You cannot possibly leave Estrema without trying our gachas de matanza (flour and meat dish), the roast lamb, our cured chistorra and chorizo sausages; and for dessert, the bollos de aceite (sweet oil buns), mantecados (lard shortbread), the Hornazo cake with the boiled egg on top, our repápalos (dumplings), finished off with a limonada, which is a mix of wine, sugar and fruit enjoyed during all celebrations.
