Church of San Martín de Tours in Arbulo

View on map

The Church of San Martín de Tours in Arbulo is an imposing temple built largely in the 16th century. However, its chancel preserves the original wall of the preceding Romanesque church, where the red paintings that once decorated it were recovered in the early 21st century.

Arbulo’s mysterious medieval paintings depict different motifs—wheels, stars and various animals, including two peacocks. They also include two large circular crosses, probably consecration crosses.

The church also stands out for the excellent collection of carved bosses in its vaults. After restoration, they now look beautiful, with magnificent polychromy depicting various saints, and even a married couple who may identify the family that patronised this building.
