Plaza de la Constitución

View on map

You are in the heart of Belmonte, where Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) lies, containing a circle of sand. Here, bullfighting events are held during the patron saint festivities celebrated in September in honour of the Virgen del Socorro (Our Lady of Help) who, legend has it, showed herself to a peasant in the 16th century in ‘El Socorro’, a crossroads between Colmenar de Oreja, Valdelaguna, Chinchón and Belmonte de Tajo. This spot, with a scent of tradition in the air, is dominated by the facade of the Town Hall from the end of the 19th century. Its portico features fine cast iron work with riveted joints supported by sturdy bases made from Colmenar de Oreja stone. Around it, a collection of traditional houses shares a roof and cornice, forming a single cover that embraces the square, whispering stories of community and celebration.

A square plaza featuring a circular sandy area traditionally used for bullfighting festivities. Particularly noteworthy are the façade of the Town Hall and, in the background, the church of the town’s patron saint, Our Lady of the Star.
